Pysanka eggs in traditional designs, with Ukrainian Rizblenky-style ostrich eggs and embroidery from the Ukraine, design and photos copyrighted by Nancy Lee Moran
Some years ago, I painted a portrait for a family in which the wife had grown up in the Ukraine. Vira kindly let me borrow her Pysanka eggs - keepsakes from her homeland - which have traditional techniques, symbols, and colors. Chicken and goose eggs have written-wax batik, using traditional folk motifs, colors, and designs. The ostrich egg has been carved in a traditional Ukrainian technique of Rizblenky.
Vira also let me borrow a traditional Ukrainian costume, from which the blue stitchery arises. I added some glass lampwork beads (from my own small collection) to enhance the beauty of the pattern.
